135 Gallon Cichlid Tank

Postby chadk » Wed Mar 15, 2017 9:18 pm

After countless Craigslist searches, auctions, trades, and set ups, I finally have my tank how I want it. My wife is over fish talk so I thought I would share with some like minded individuals!

135 Gallon old school tank with thick glass center brace.
Homemade stand out of red oak with the red mahogany finish. Still needs canopy and doors.
2 aquaclear 110S and a huge sunsun canister
300 w heater
Powerhead for current and to keep holey rock from collecting waste.
3 24 inch Aquatic life blue and white leds
3 big pieces and a few small pieces of holey rock including a 60+ pound gem from Craigslist
Few pieces of driftwood for plecos
Pool filter sand

Approximate Stock list...sorry in advance to the purists, I mixed lakes. Keep in mind all are very small and I will move things around as they grow

20 julies - ornatus transcriptus and dickfeldi
4 bright orange leleuipi
20 acei went a little crazy at auction
6 labs
7 pearlmutt
20 socofoli
Taiwan reef group- have to see if they can hold their own.
6 bristlenose
1 huge red Bruno pleco, probably 10 inches
Some form of yellow tiger pleco
A few dither
A few misc cichlids
A few misc cats

I moved my adult haps n peacocks to another tank. I would love for them to move back in and take top of tank once these are no longer bite sized, but we will have to see how it plays out.

Well....thanks for reading and looking at pics, hope you enjoy!! ... %20Uploads

Looks great.

I am by no means telling you that you did anything wrong, but keep an eye on the Julies as the fish all grow. It has been my experience that Julies do not do so well with Mbuna, they are more shy , have trouble competing for food and are intimidated by the larger more aggressive fish (Mbuna).

When i had scolofi, the males wanted pretty big territories and were pretty aggressive. But cichilds can vary a lot from individual to individual.. Just saying they might be a problem, mainly for the Tangs, later.

I think the Twain Reefs will be fine.

Stempy, don't count on getting those back!

Paul, definitely have the same concerns. I couldn't decide between tangs and mbuna after enjoying both in the past so I took a stab at trying to get some of the more mild mbuna and the tangs, overcrowding when young, and letting them grow out together to hopefully be long term friends! May end up separating lakes in the future.

Socofoli were not my original plan but picked up 20 1.5 to 2 inch for $25. I'm a sucker for fish deals.

Thanks for the feedback!
