Suggest a speaker/topic

Postby mmillerr » Sat Jun 01, 2013 10:50 pm

What do we think about adding a Suggest a Speaker/Topic suggestion section for the forum? Giving the members more feedback would at least give them an opportunity to express their interests/preferences for upcoming meetings instead of putting the entire burden on the board members to come up with ideas. Just a thought...

For instance I know at least a couple of us would be interested in hearing from Msjinkzd on nano fish and shrimp. :D

Hey Mark.. I have been trying to talk everyone into bringing Rachel over for a while, so maybe your suggestion to do so will help!

I don't know if Tom Barr does any speaker events, but he would be the plants guy to have. (Unless someone could get Amano.. Lol!)

There was a discussion regarding having Tom Barr as a speaker on GCAS' site. I have to agree with the feedback there that Tom may be too technical for the average person keeping plants. Not every person interested in plants wants to go for the specialized substrates, CO2, dosing etc. involved in the Barr method.

I think it would be a great to get more feedback from other members for preferred topics for speakers. I know we book speakers for our club for a multitude of reasons, but perhaps those of us sitting in on the board meetings are missing some opportunities that others would enjoy.

I, for one, would enjoy a speaker on tetras (characins), as I know we have not had one since the convention in 2010, and before that, I am not sure when the last time was we had one. I know they are a large, diverse family of fish which makes them even more fascinating to me

I know there have even been discussions on doing a more basic "setting up an aquarium" talk which may help bring in some new members if we really get the word out there.

Garrett,

We had a Tetra speaker laast Fall, but I cannot remember his name of hand. It was a good talk and I enjoyed it much. Sorry, But I believe you missed out on that on.

I do remember that now that you mention it, but I don't think I made any of the meetings last year. Since getting laid off, I have been able to make every meeting! A true blessing in disguise.

I know I'm super late to this discussion, but I like Mark and Cory's suggestions. Both have a good amount of knowledge and it'd be cool to hear a presentation on shrimp keeping and "the Barr method" which has produced amazing results in planted aquariums
